Christmas card from Phil Anne Matthew Angus Helen - 2008

• Phil started a new job at Lancaster University in June and has been commuting due the credit crunch. We hope to move in 2009. Hard times, soon to end, we hope…..
• Anne is ‘flat out Mum’ and district nurse, working 2 days a week and running the Beavers
• Helen, now 3, turned from toddler to girl, loves ballet and singing
• Angus, 6, plays rugby for Okehampton U7s, utterly loves it and scores tries just for fun
• Matthew, 8 plays rugby and is also is a great pianist and keyboard player. Poor Matt has been ill this Autumn with glandular fever (or the likes?) and hopes to get back to normal in 2009

Angus was on top 'grumpy' form cross because he did not win the Helicopter in th raffle. A few pictures here (caught on the new 'old' Fuji camera I just bought on ebay).....

8th Three Peaks bike race .....

Towards Ingleton
Originally uploaded by Phil Haygarth

Last Sunday I completed my 8th 3 peaks bike race and on balance I am pretty pleased with how I did. It was a glorious sunny day and this year for this first time ever I managed not to over eat the previous 24 hours, and started out from Helwith Bridge on a bowl of Shreddies and an energy gel! Friends Trev and Leanne had impressed on me the importance of not starting too fast and I used a wrist pulse meter to make sure I kept my maximum below 165 – if I go beyond this I tend to build up lactic acid and pay for it later in the race. Basically it worked, I did not panic on the starting road section and was happy to let others race away. When the steep side of Simon’s Fell kicked in I seemed to claw back places, enjoying clambering up the steep slope whilst others queued by the fence. At the top I lost about 5 minutes waiting for the large race field to cross the style, briefly saying hello to Leanne, who seemed somewhat shaken and upset about her partner’s misfortune at the start (follow the links above for their stories). I got to the top of Ingleborough in 1 hour 10 and to Cold Coates in 1.25, to grab a bottle off my stalwart support Mum. Onward, past Ingleton (photographed here by colleague and track-side resident Harry Pinkerton – thanks Harry) to Whernside, when a bouncing and enthusiastic Tigger Trev caught and passed me, having recovered from his injury on the start line. I made the summit in 2.33 and descended, somewhat frustrated by how many riders seem to be carrying their bikes downhill and blocking an otherwise eminently rideable route. There did seem to be a lot of ‘traffic’ this year. At Ribblehead I grabbed a welcome bottle of carb drink and gel again from Mum, briefly stopping to pick it up again after dropping it at the cattle grid, onward down the road, passing mate Andrew Talbot to climb Pen-y-Ghent. I definitely slowed here, nothing dramatic but the fight seemed to go from my legs. Interestingly, I could still get my pulse up to 165, but the power output was way down. I recall the unpleasant sticky fingers from the leaking gel as I slogged up the track. I hate those gels and I really dislike the after affects of the stickiness, but they do seem to work. Reaching the top in 4.13 (it took me 1 hour 40 from the top of Wherneside and this was quite poor in relation to the rest of the ride, and others). Descending without incident, the last couple of miles along the road I hooked up with a guy who was super strong and we took it in turns to dig hard, my pulse nearing 170 as I rested the final rise (when he dropped me). Great to get to the finish, I recovered easily this year, no cramp at all, probably as a result of all the ‘astronaut drinks’ that are so good nowadays. It took me 4 hours and 41 minutes, my 3rd fastest time and 15 minutes slower than my personal best of 1999. I cannot complain although I would like to improve on my PB of 4.25 one day and I have a dream of doing less than 4 hours, which will probably be only achieved if I lose another 2 stone. In the words of my friend Roger Ebner “Pretty good, only 5 minutes lost for each child you have brought up since 1999”. A good perspective from a fellow father of three! Thanks to my Mum for her support on the day and to Anne, Matthew, Angus and Helen for supporting me whilst I indulged in the training this summer. Will be back!

Here are the results and split times.

France Holiday Summer 2008

Like last year we used the excellent Canvas holiday company that supplies ready erected tents with fridges, beds, cookers etc and this year had a dual location with 6 nights on our loved Ile de Re (as last year) followed by 6 nights at St Jean de Monts (Vendee) (click links for the photos). This year we took our own bikes and travelled in the new family Bongo which was a breeze. The children made some great friends at both locations - with Hanna, Justin(JJ) and Ben (Il de Re) and William and Ellen (Vendee) - these friendships also helped us make good friends with the parents too! Highlights at Il de Re were crabbing in the rock pools, morning runs for me accompanied by Angus on the bike, playing table tennis, Matthew fetching the bread from the shop and playing volley ball and soccer with the big boys. Highlights at the Vendee were visits from Lizzie. Hamish, Serena and Flora (from our home village of South Zeal), the boys on quad bikes (they LOVED it!), playing chess with Matt and downfall with Angus and a trip to the Circus. The latter was particularly special because Helen (somewhat bravely, equipped with clothy in hand for protective sniffs) saw Lions for the first time and Angus, aged 5, guested in the ring with a clown and other grown-ups, miming air guitar - the brief video clip below shows the special moment of the brave 5 year old...

I worked with some great colleagues and made some long term friends (some of which accompanied me for lunch recently - see pictures here). Although I will continue to collaborate with people at North Wyke, the last couple of weeks I have been saying my formal 'goodbyes' as an employee, which culminated in a lovely send off 'cream tea' on Tuesday. David Chadwick, my long term friend and colleague made a terrific presentation speech and I was given a lovely John Christian painting of Dartmoor, a 'This is your life at North Wyke' photo book of my life through the years and a signed North Wyke photo card. I was touched to see some past colleagues turn off to mark the occasion, which included Andy Fraser (who made the trip from London) and Tim Harrod who presented me with a humorous 'IGER's Tiger Flies the Nest' Okehampton Times spoof. Happy days - thanks everyone.

A hot day out

Last weekend I dragged my carcus around the tortuous 100 mile Dartmoor Classic cycle ride. It was a great day out, shared with companions Roger Ebner (my new-found training partner this spring) and Richard, long term boogie-bike friend, and co-rider from last year. In contract to last year's rain, it was a baking hot day (my computer registered 32 degrees C) and the route this time was varied from last year, with the infamous Dartmeet climb coming after 80 plus miles. It took me over 8 hours, in part reflecting the harder route and heat, but also my diminished training schedule this spring. The great weather made it especially pleasurable though, and I hunkered down and did it, ignoring the pain best I could. I had a great support crew, who intercepted us after Okehampton (35 miles) and at the top of Dartmeet (some lovely 'big hugs' from Helen as I stopped at the side of the road). For those interested in stats my official time was 8.15 (including all the necessary cramp stops), and my bike computer says I did 102 miles in 7 hours 24, at an average speed of 13.8 mph and I burned 5400 calories and nearly 600 g of fat (judging my slow time I need to burn some more)!! Here are some snaps that Anne took.....

A couple of weeks ago I got this answer 'phone message from my daughter, describing what has been a step change in her lifestyle. Apart from the significance of this for the family budget, and the relief on Anne and I after 8 years of continuous nappies, the message is also very cute because she so evidently does not quite get the answer 'phone concept.....

Family Skiing Holiday, Val Cenis, French Alps

DSCF9752
Originally uploaded by Phil Haygarth
Between 8-15th March we went skiing and what was a bit of a gamble (with the children so young) turned out great. Our philosophy was that first and foremost it was a family holiday rather than a solely ski-focused trip, and it worked, with some fun and quality time together. The boys went to ski lessons for 2.5 hours a day in the mornings. On day one they were on the nursery slopes and thereafter up the hill on the chair! Matt did the whole 6 days but Angus did 4 days - he was a tad under the weather and got tired. Later in the week I had a quality one to one ski session with both - which saw Angus (aged 5) on the blue runs and Matthew (aged 7) on the reds - they are off, amazing. This was a great parent moment for me. Anne and I also each managed some lone skiing for an hour or so most days and easily felt like we had skied enough - it is not that much fun sking alone. We had a couple of afternoons skiing as a family with Helen skiing between my legs whilst I supported her (she was so relaxed on one occasion she had the audacity to fall asleep!). Other special memories were made from simple shopping trips to the village with Helen, sledging, teaching Angus Uno (and him winning) and a great apartment next to the slopes. Pictures here. Phil

Wasdale 2008

The first weekend of March saw me have a precious couple of days walking in Walsdale with my brother and cousin Adrian, amongst other friends. What is now an annual bonding experience (see other blog reports 2006 here and 2007 here) more than fullfilled expectations with an ascent of Pillar and a Sunday morning jaunt to the top of the Wasdale screes. Some notable exitement was a powercut in the valley due to high winds. Great blokey fun with some great blokes! My pictures are here and those from Adrian, Dave and the Wasdale Public Conveniences Knitting Club are here.....

And below is a 6 minute video summary...(warning only for those who have a blokey interest in bodily function, being overly picky about choosing breakfast and Jose Mourinho fibres)......

Half term in Cornwall - best yet!

On this occasion we were joined by the Bol family in addition to the regulars of the Bells and the Chadwicks and more people made it more fun and gave us more options to do things or simply chill (see previous trips blogged 2006 here and 2007 here). I guess it was also easier for us because the children are that bit older - the boys played on their own nearly all the time and slept together (with the others) in one room - what an adventure for Angus! St Agnes was the great venue (what a village!) and the 18 of us stayed in a cracking house, next door to the St Agnes Hotel, venue for a 'sharpener' of St Austell's finest Ale most days. The coastal walk from Perranporth to St Anges with Tom and Matthew was a high for me, whereas the Murder Mystery night 'murder at cafe resistance' was the social high of many highs. Other notables were trips to Tate St Ives, beautiful Lostwithiel and Fowey, Newquay Zoo (3 years to the day we found out we were having Helen and a real hit for the children). We also had a bonus invite to other South Zealites staying in another holiday home in St Kew. Roll on next year!
